Mars food production installs largest solar energy installation Candy

In Hackettstown, New Jersey, where a bat factory one of America's favorite candy - bite-sized, candy-coated chocolate drops film - the predominant color today is green.

The color of the candy-coated, of course, still come in various shades, but the production facility of them is as "green" almost it hurts to look.

Candy-maker Mars just installed the largest single installation of photovoltaic solar energy in the nation in a production plant food as well as the largest in the state.

A joint effort between Mars and Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), the solar division, solar power, matrix of 2.2 megawatts, consisting of 28,680 solar panels in a field of 18 hectares adjacent to the factory, provide 20 percent of the electricity plant sweets during peak load, or enough to supply electricity to about 1,800 homes. It will also reduce carbon emissions by 1,000 metric tons each year, or the equivalent of removing about 200 cars off the road.

The system, installed under a power purchase agreement that allows Mars to buy all production of electricity from solar, while PSEG operates and maintains, was designed and installed by Boulder, Colorado-based solar juwi Inc., which will monitor initial operations and provide some maintenance services.

The thin film photovoltaic (PV) panels courtesy of Tempe, based in Arizona First Solar, a leading solar panel manufacturers in the country. These panels, which are not available through wholesalers or retailers, are part of the commitment First Solar to deliver quality work only through a select group of developers of independent power projects and systems integrators. This allows that First Solar to manage the lifecycle of its modules supply of raw materials through collection and recycling. In February, First Solar announced that it had broken the $ 1 per watt barrier.

The solar energy project, referred to as a "solar garden" is the 11th largest of its kind in the U.S., and rising cost of $ 10 million, adding to the renewable energy portfolio in New Jersey, which calls for 30 percent (from renewables) in 2020.

Mars, which also makes Snickers and Twix, has been the renewal of your site in Hackettstown, headquarters and manufacturing facility combined with a view to gaining LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for its solar panel, water conservation toilets, sinks and water fountains, an administration building energy of the system that operates as an industrial-size Smart Grid Monitoring and modulator, and lighting energy efficiency, among other improvements.
